Setting up a Dish with motor using USALs, the easy way.

USALS, the easy way to control a diSEqC motor, such as the SG 2100 or 6000, controlled dish.

Briefly what you are attempting to do is to set up your system by programming one satellite with the USALS information, i.e. latitude and longitude, lnbf l.o. frequency etc and adjusting the dish so that when the motor swings to that satellite, the dish points to that satellite.  Once on a bird, we usually use the 97 degree west bird, T5, IA 5, Galaxy whatever they call it this week, the rest of the birds are found automatically.  We use that bird because the first channel is reprogrammed into most receivers.  If you live in say Oklahoma or Texas you may want to choose a bird further down the arc.

First set up a pole to to mount the dish on, Be sure that it is plumb (Straight up and down). Assemble the dish and motor according to the directions packed with the motor. Determine your latitude and longitude using dishpointer.com. Move the pointer around on the map to your exact location. You will need these numbers when programming your receiver. Note which direction is South.

Make sure the settings on the dish are set according to your instructions. I set the longitude to 39 degrees longitude and calculated 23.4 on the dish here south of Cincinnati. The directions will tell you how to determine these angles. You can tell your dish to go to its highest point by setting your receiver to "Go to zero".

Now start up your receiver, we will use the Traxis DBS 4000 for our installation.

First get into the "Installation" menu. Press menu, down to the third box, press menu, highlight "Antenna Setup".Highlight "Satellite" and press menu. Line 2 is menu, we will use the easy finder lnbf, 9750/10600. Most standard lnbfs are 10750. C-Band is 5150.

Scroll down "Positioner" Press the right arrow until "USALS" is highlight. For the first bird you must the press "Menu".and set Latitude and Longitude from Dishpointer..com. Back out of all menus, save, and the dish should move to where it thinks 97 degrees is. Go to channel 1 on Intelsat 5 or whatever they are calling the bird at 97 degrees. Press "Info" on the remote. You will see bars come up on the screen. If you have an easyfinder lnbf, the amp on the dish, you will probably see the light flashing red. Be sure that the triangle(white mark) is straight up when the dish is at its highest point. The lnbf looks twisted to one side on the easy finder and straight up on the standard lnb. You must press info to activate the light on the lnb. If you have another receiver you will have to use the on screen quality bar. Now the objective is to get the dish to point at the bird at 97 degrees. Your dish should be pointed roughly south. Rotate your motor east and west on the pole looking for the light to turn yellow then green or the on screen the quality bar activating. You may need to raise or lower the dish, slightly, at the dish setting on the side of the dish, not on the motor. When you find the 97 deg satellite tighten everything down. Check to make sure you are still on the bird. Now your dish is on the arc and you can scan for channels You should now see one or two channels.

Now scan for additional channels. Press Menu, scroll down to Installation and press menu. The most complete way to find channels including new ones is to highlight "Auto Scan" , the highlight and search and press menu. The receiver will find all of the channels available

You will now need to find additional satellites. Back to the installation Menu, choose antenna setup. Choose the next bird say AMC4, Set L NB type and USALS. Back out and your dish should go to AMC4. Scan AMC4 and move on to the next bird. Your dish should go on to the satellites in its memory. It worked very well the first time for me, I hope the you have the same luck. It will take a few hours to do it the first time.

NOTE, many techs choose to choose DiSEqC 1.2 and set each satellite manually. That is a whole other set of directions.
